Home Office Design Tips: Working From Home

Last summer, we contributed to an article about home office design. Little did we know, we’d soon ALL be working from home - office or not. So we decided it was the perfect time to share our suggestions on simple changes you can make to create a home work space that is both productive and organized.

Create a routine that mimics your work day as much as possible. Even if you’re not working normal hours because you have children to care for or otherwise, it’s important to designate a spot in your home to be your work space for maximum efficiency when you ARE working. And most importantly, it creates a space you can leave behind when the work day is done - so you can shut down and feel like you have left your work 'at the office' when stopping for the day.

Having a clean space ranks number one for us when it comes to productivity. When working from home, less mess equals less distraction. You should aim for your home workspace to at least have the illusion of looking neat and tidy. Keep your desk clear with these easy ideas:

  • Invest in some pretty desk organizers to keep papers at bay.

  • Drill a hole in your desk to keep errant cords out of sight. Use velcro to secure the cords to the underside of your desk to prevent irritating tangles and keep your space clear

Keep things bright to stay focused. The home office isn't the place for mood lighting. Arrange lamps to light up every area you might use, especially for those zoom calls. Having a well-lit area will not only give your eyes a break, but will help with your focus and ability to complete tasks with more energy than in a dimly lit space.

Maximizing your space, especially when being home all the time, is also key. We recommend investing in some casters to put on chairs or ottomans. This allows you to easily shift them around when you need to create more space for an in-home workout, conference call or a makeshift play space for the kids.

What are your tips for this new #WFH life? We’d love to hear from you! Wishing everyone a safe and healthy weekend…at home :)
